The Safeguarding and Quality Assurance Unit has responsibility for the oversight of all children subject to child protection and children looked after in Knowsley.
The Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) and Child Protection Chairs aim to improve care planning for children looked after and children on child protection, putting the needs of the child first to promote and safeguard their welfare.
Every child who is looked after must have a care plan or pathway plan which details the long-term plan for that child/young person and sets out the requirements to meet their day to day living arrangements. The appointment of an IRO for every child looked after is a legal requirement and their role is to quality assure the care planning and review process for each child looked after and to ensure that their wishes and feelings are given full consideration.
There is also a full-time permanent Quality Assurance and Audit Lead for the Safeguarding and Quality Assurance Unit whose focus is to audit within Children’s Social Care and also to support multi agency audits.
IROs also undertake Regulation 44 visits to the four Council operated children’s residential homes on a monthly basis.
